A Standard VLBI Interface Specification has already been Adopted by the International VLBI Community. The signal levels, cabling, and connectors are fully specified. This effort, undertaken with the combined backing of the International VLBI Service (IVS) and the Global VLBI Working Group (GVWG), drew on the combined expertise of VLBI engineering experts from institutions worldwide and spanned more than 1.5 years of work by many people. - The purpose of VSI is to define a standard data interface to and from VLBI data systems sothat various systems are inter operable; that is, data may be recorded on various different systems and all played back together at a correlator. Problems with non-inter operability among various VLBI data system have long plagued VLBI, and VSI-H is a first step in alleviating this situation. In fact, at least three groups are already designing equipment which will be in conformance with this new VSI-H specification. Work is now beginning to extend this specification to include a software command set (dubbed VSI-S). Both VSI-H and VSI-S will be periodically reviewed and updated as new ideas and new technology become available. - You are welcome to examine the new VSI-H (hardware) specification at either (click on 'VLBI') or at ; the latter site, maintained by CRL in Japan, is perhaps particularly interesting since it documents the long series of draft documents that preceded the final specification. - The members of International VSI Technology Coordination Group, representing 12 VLBI institutions worldwide, who participated in the development of this specification are: Wayne Cannon, York Univ, Canada Brent Carlson, DRAO, Canada Dick Ferris, ATNF, Australia Dave Graham, MPI, Germany Nori Kawaguchi, NAO, Japan Tetsuro Kondo, CRL Japan Sergei Pogrebenko, JIVE, Netherlands Misha Popov, ASC, Russia Jon Romney, NRAO, US Ralph Spencer, Jodrell, UK Alan Whitney, MIT Haystack, US Rick Wietfeldt, JPL, US - In addition to the formal members of the committee, many individuals within the represented institutions also made valuable contributions. - The VSI TC Group invites comments on both the VSI-H document and any other aspect of VSI on which you may wish to comment. - Alan Whitney, for the VSI Technology Coordination Group
