The Department of Radio Astronomy is part of the Centre for Astronomy at the Nicolaus Copernicus University. It is located in Piwnice, 15 km north of Torun. The site contains 32 m and 15 m radio telescopes. The largest telescope is a vital element of the European VLBI Network and is unique in eastern Europe. The research groups at the department are involved in several international scientific and development projects. The major research activities of the department are studies of various kinds of astrophysical objects such as quasars, radio galaxies, pulsars, interstellar masers, solar and extra-solar planetary systems.
